MEET THE HELLWORKERS: DAVID CANELA

How is your typical day at Tequila Works?

My average day starts reading through all the pending emails, answering questions and solving doubts when necessary. Then we hold a small design daily meeting, where we plan the day ahead.

Generally speaking, I document the game’s mechanics and systems, helping the code team to understand what is needed in terms of design. That often involves how a mechanic works and how interacts with other systems. Sometimes, that also involves researching and benchmarking other games. Lastly, I work on the document itself, trying to make it more visual than word-heavy.

I have to attend one or two meetings everyday (some days it feels I am in a never-ending meeting!) in order to review design and code, or to check our dependencies with art and animation. Thus, I am in touch with the whole team.

What are you working on at the moment?

At this point, most of the documentation work is sorted out, and I am helping on other matters, like optimizing levels and improving their performance. I also work hand to hand with the code department, polishing the controls and the camera system.

What’s the part of your job you enjoy most?

It’s hard to say. Probably, the pre-production stage it’s the most fun of a project, when you investigate new ways to do things and define the systems that will be needed in production. Also, in full production, implementing and polishing those systems is a lot of fun. Even those long meetings with your co-workers can be fun, since they are a great team and we always have some laughs.

And the part you enjoy least?

Sometimes I have to get serious in order to get the job done, even if it means cutting cool stuff off for lack of time, resources or, simply, because they don’t fit in the game. It’s an essential part of the job, but it is quite demanding. Luckily, we have a really nice, understanding working environment.

What are you playing at the moment, or what game are you looking forward to?

I have a lot of games I still need to finish, but I am mostly playing Dark Souls 3 and the Overwatch beta right now. And I am really looking forward Uncharted 4 (I don’t know when I will find the time to play it!) Oh, and I also play Earthbound on my way to the office :p
